Abstract
Paving
interlayers have been used in asphalt concrete (AC) overlays for a variety of
benefits. In cold regions such as Alaska and other northern states, pavements
are more prone to distresses due to extreme climatic conditions. This webinar
presents a study which has been conducted to explore how paving interlayers
function in AC pavements in Alaska through laboratory investigation, pavement
structural analysis, finite element method (FEM) analysis, and surveys from
field test sections with three types of paving interlayers. The multi-axial
interlayer provided the best overall laboratory performance in terms of
stiffness, permeability, and resistance to cracking. The pavement structural
analyses confirmed that using interlayer could improve fatigue crack resistance
and extend service life. The FEM analysis indicated that the multi-axial
interlayer could improve stress distribution more effectively than the two-yarn
bi-axial interlayer. Preliminary results from field evaluation of test sections
showed that pavement performance was improved if reinforced by interlayers, in
terms of reduced amount and severity of cracking. Further monitoring of field
test sections are recommended to give clearer projection of the utility of the
paving interlayers in cold regions.
